Course overview
Course description
Edward Thomas was a writer of exceptional sensibility and through his prose and verse he shows us the English landscape at a time when it was facing great change. With his family, Thomas settled in Steep, Hampshire, determined to live by the pen. Complex and sometimes troubled, he began writing poetry just eighteen months before his death at Arras in 1917 and has gained a reputation as one of the finest poets of the early 20th century. The course starts with an introduction to Thomas’s life, followed by in-depth study of a selection of his poems. We’ll be looking at his style and themes and considering this complex and often troubled man in the context of his times. During our sessions there will be an opportunity to discuss and share ideas and develop analytical skills that you can use when reading other poets’ work. A course booklet containing the texts to be studied during the course, as well as some additional biographical information, will be provided on Canvas; no extra materials are required.
