Course overview
Course description
Over 5 weeks, we’ll explore these artist groups and their roots in artist colonies, communities, associations and schools like the Vienna and other secessions, the Vienna Werkstätten, the Bauhaus, and the Worpswede Colony, all central to the development of post-impressionism, expressionism, surrealism, art nouveau and art deco. We’ll find out how these groups developed new ideas about the multi-disciplinary nature of art, its production and its consumption and new forms, genres and techniques, taking the visual arts into the 20th century. We’ll look at the groups’ histories and activities as well as key works by key members/artists. This course is open to those new to art history as well as those who already have some experience. During our sessions, we will look at examples of paintings and other art works. Background on the historic, social and cultural context, on the works, artists and artistic styles/schools will be provided as will resources on further viewing and reading for each session.
