Course overview
Course description
The course introduction will examine the distinction between free-standing public buildings and new construction alongside historic structures. We will then consider a number of case studies, including the work of Norman Foster (Royal Academy, Reichstag, British Museum) Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (Tate Modern and its new extension, Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg), Rick Mather (Wallace Collection, Ashmolean Museum extension), I M Pei (Louvre project including his glass pyramid) and Michael Hopkins (Norwich Cathedral refectory). The course will conclude with a review and discussion. Students are encouraged to apply their own aesthetic judgement to the ideas which modern architects have developed for these sensitive projects.
