Course overview
Course description
The USA in 1940 was a nation that was yet to emerge from the economic depression of the 1930s. The war changed that and changed America鈥檚 outlook on the world. Yet, the nation that fought Hitler and Naziism for freedom and democracy did so with armed forces that were segregated. The war had a profound effect on the status of American women in society and kick-started the movement toward Civil Rights reform. As the USA emerged from the war as a global superpower, she turned inwards as she confronted Communists, real and imaginary, at home and abroad. These are the decades of Containment, Cold War and Consumerism 鈥 the USA 1940 -72.
